Friendly and fun mountain

I learned to ski and ride at Mount Southington, though I never appreciated it that much until recently. Mount Southington is a great family ski area and a fantastic place to learn. I can't say enough about their ski school, and especially their children's program. The instructors are knowledgable, friendly, and go out of their way to make your time on the mountain enjoyable. My daugher's ski instructor remembered her name a week after the lesson and came over to say hi to her when we were in the lodge. I couldn't believe it! Aside from their dedicated instructors, Mount Southington has a lot to offer. They have a great race program, top notch snowmaking and grooming, and night-skiing. It is located minutes from the highway, so it is easy to get to. The terrain itself is not that challenging, and the chairlift ride takes twice as long as the trip down (longer, if you ride the triple), but it's still a great place to be if you have a few free hours in your day. The website doesn't do it justice, the food isn't that great, parking is horrible, but Mount Southington is by far the most playful and fun mountain in CT.

I agree with Rachel

I agree entirtely with Rachel's review. The closeness of Mt. Southington to Southern Connecticut makes it a good place if you feel you just have to get onto skis. For anything more, I would drive further north.

Good for casual intermediates and beginners

I grew up in central Connecticut and did a good bit of my early skiing at Mt. Southington. Overall it's nothing to write home about, but if you're a beginning skier it'll do just fine. There's not a lot of reason to drive 2 or 3 hours to a bigger mountain if you're going to spend all day on the bunny hill.

Once you make your way from beginner to intermediate, though, it's probably worth the drive to Vermont or New York for better snow and more challenging terrain. However, if you're a casual intermediate skier who only skis a day or two per season, there's probably enough for you here.

Also, be sure to time your vists around the weather. It's too warm in Connecticut to maintain the conditions reliably, and if it hasn't snowed for a while things get pretty bare pretty quickly.
